  • because since 1964 it attracts, promotes, creates and hosts the widest number of national and international institutions, which are main sector players: the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), now the Abdus Salam International Centre; the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA); the AREA Science Park; the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), with branch locations also in New Delhi and Cape Town; the CBM – Molecular Biomedicine District of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, managing body of the Cluster Smart Health FVG; the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS); the Immaginario Scientifico Laboratory now called Sicence Centre Immaginario Scientifico;m FIT “Fondazione Internazionale Trieste”; ELETTRA Sincrotrone Trieste, I.R.C.C.S Burlo Garofolo; University of Trieste
  • because it hosts the headquarters of the Cluster Smart Health, which can rely on a favourable ecosystem in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, comprising over 150 companies working in the biomedical, biotechnology and bioinformatics fields, boasting overall annual sales of over 800 million Euro and more than 5.000 employed worker, and which has already organized, in collaboration the the business network BioHighTech NET, two successful editionss of the BioHighTech Companies Day in 2015 and 2016
  • because, owing to its privileged geographic location and strategic, political and economic position, the city favours direct contact with Central and Eastern European countries, with which Trieste keeps long standing fruitful institutional and economic relations, and which have allowed the city, over the past few years, to act as a bridge towards Western Europe and the European Union.

Trieste will in fact be European Science Capital in 2020 (ESOF 2020), where science to business innovation themes will be develped, such as Smart Health.
